Trisha & John’s Engagements

I LOVE shooting in downtown L.A.! On Sunday I spent the afternoon with Trisha & John, my Nov 20th wedding couple. We started shooting at the L.A. Library, near Cafe Pinot. From there we enjoyed almost a deserted downtown area! We walked around and through the historic streets & under the impressive umbrella of high-rise buildings. Ultimately, it was so much fun working with Trisha & John.. I loved their fun attitude and carefree spirits, which definitely reflects in some of the images below.

Julie & David’s Engagements

Here are some images from Julie & David’s engagement session! This last Monday we started shooting at the Getty Villa in Malibu, Ca. This is an amazing location full of beautiful, ornate features: hallways, pools, frescas etc.. unfortunately we didn’t stay long enough to thoroughly explore all of this. We were escorted out, much to my surprise, after about 20 minutes of shooting. Fortunately, we took that all in stride and made our way to the scenic state beach of Leo Carrillo. From there, the session had a bit more of a casual, fun feel as we made our way through the cliffs, coves and inlets that are part of the Leo Carrillo’s natural, beautiful landscape.

Carina & Alex’s Engagements

I’ve never seen quite as much laughter during an e-session as I did with Carina & Alex! Right from the start they were smiling and laughing and smiling…. and laughing! It was so much fun just to wait for their lighthearted and flirtatious exchanges! We decided to start shooting at Pasadena’s City Hall. I’ve said it before, but I LOVE shooting in Pasadena… and City Hall provides so many interesting angles, vignettes, light sources etc. that it’s just a blast to shoot there.

Carina & Alex came to me a few months ago because I photographed Alex’s parents vow renewal wedding in 2006 (and they loved my work of course!). I remembered Alex from that time and was overjoyed when he called to tell me that he was getting married. From my very first meeting I could sense that Carina & Alex have a very special relationship and I started looking forward to all the moments I was going to capture in the coming months. Please enjoy a few of the images that caught my eye!

I wanted to share one last image from Kim & George’s engagement session. I love this image because it seems so quaint… a cute black dog with perky ears, a classic diner setting, ketchup & milkshake in the window… and of course, a kiss!

Kim & George’s Engagements

I had the joy of photographing Kim & George’s engagement session yesterday in Pasadena, CA. I’ve been looking forward to this shoot for quite awhile! I knew it was going to be a fun, carefree and exciting session.. From my very first encounters with Kim, I could tell that her bubbly, happy spirit was going to translate into great images.

We started the session at a Johnny Rockets diner in Old Town Pasadena. Shooting there was was both sentimental and extremely fun! It was at this spot that Kim & George had their very first date. As a photographer, I always enjoy shooting at a location that’s unique, special and out of the ordinary… so basically it was the perfect place to start. Adding to the fun, Kim & George brought along their beloved pooch Spock! He’s so adorable and the admiration he showed for “mom & dad” was touching.

The session started in front of the diner and then we moved inside. I was uncertain as to what the diner’s policy was regarding photography. Most courtyards, restaurants and private properties are a bit leery about professional photography. To my surprise, they were more than accommodating… before long we were taking down signs, standing on stools, moving furniture and event sitting on the counter tops… Hilarious!

Every time I shoot a session I try to step outside my comfort zone.. I continually want to reinvent my style, composition and craft. The first image below exemplifies this. From a visual element it is one of my favorites. The brick segments, lines and leading edges all point to Kim & George. I feel like I’m virtually drawn into their story. All of the images below move me to some extent for various reasons. There is an image below that I photographed from a low angle inside of the diner. You can actually see the underside of the counter top and all the corresponding gum. I like little details like that (however gross it may be!)

Ultimately we ended walking up Holly Street near Pasadena’s City Hall. There were so many great nooks to create amazing images that narrowing down where to shoot was the hardest part of the day for me. As quickly as the session started.. it ended with a boom! (a different story for a different post) In the end, I had such a great time getting to know Kim & George a little better and I can’t wait for their wedding on April 3rd at La Quinta Resort & Spa, in La Quinta, CA.
